Live Query Playlists / Search

For years I've been trying to find a player that does ratings, playcount and queryable playlists. I see rmpc does ratings and playcount via the stickers sqldb...but can I query this via a playlist?

At present there are only three players (that I know of) that can do this, musikcube, Tauon and fooyin...can rmpc do this (I can't find anything in the docs) or if not is this planned for the future?

It would be elneato to be able to click the playlist for "newest music" or "top 100 with highest play count" or "songs with ratings >= 4"...

At present I also can't figure out how to search via rating, is this possible? (The tags listed in mpd docs would say no...)

The ratings and liked status are a very new functionality, the latest major one actually. I have no concrete plans with it for now but I am more than open to expanding them wherever it makes sense.

I am not 100% sure what you mean by "query the playlist". Is it searching in the Queue table with the EnterSearch action? Or literally searching in the saved playlists?

You should see rating/liked filters when you configure MPD to use stickers and after rmpc correctly detects that (please note that you need to build rmpc from the source code, the latest release does not have ratings etc yet). See:

"query (is) the playlist" is perhaps the wrong wording query the library to build the playlist is more to the point.
Db style queries to build the playlist i.e. "live query playlist."
Playlist called "Best Songs" would be: SELECT * WHERE rating>=4
Playlist called "No Love" would be: SELECT * WHERE playcount == 0 OR rating=0 OR rating=NULL
Playlist called "New This Month" would be: SELECT * WHERE ctime -30
Playlist called "Xmas Songs" would be: SELECT * WHERE year>=1930 AND year<1960 AND (genre=christmas OR genre=holidays)
Playlist called "No 80's Metal" would be: SELECT * WHERE year>1990 AND genre LIKE %metal% (for all those pesky sub-genres)

It is. However the rmpc docs also say it uses the columns/fields as listed on the mpd docs which doesn't include ratings or playcounts so if rmpc can do this now that bit in the docs needs a tweak.

Ah right, got you I think. So you basically want "smart/dynamic playlists" where you write/create a query in some shape or form and what you get is either a saved playlist or a queue with all the matched songs?

There have been some other tools and clients floating around over the years attempting to do this to various degrees of success. You can try looking around if there are any you could use alongside rmpc.

Other than that, I think it would be interesting to attempt this in rmpc but will need some thinking through and working around limitations of MPD's search queries. For example I do not think you can do (DATE > '1950') because MPD treats all tag values like strings.

That is because ratings and playcounts are not MPD's stuff. They are "made up" by rmpc (and some other clients) using stickers.

I've looked at the tools, trust me it's been over 20 years of digging and searching...and or just trying to get foobar2000 to not be trash under wine. Everything is just duct tape and bailing wire, constantly broken, janky, terrible.

That is because ratings and playcounts are not MPD's stuff. They are "made up" by rmpc (and some other clients) using stickers.

Yeah but the docs say rmpc goes by the mpd ones which says without saying that the rmpc column bits added in the new release you mentioned wouldn't exist or work heh. There needs to be rmpc uses the listed mpd columns fields but ***Oh Yeah, we also have 2 that aren't on that list. ;)

I find it "curious" how we have these libraries organized and tagged with all this data but players never make use of this past some passive "display" features. You have to manually add and remove things wasting tons of time and energy for what could just be a live query playlist. This was done like in the 90's with foobar2000 and somehow it's just never been paid attention to in Linux players...you'd think the more data driven/minded *nix crowd would be more focused on using all this data...but I guess not.

I hit this limit with my own player, too and did a workaround to construct a string-search that can filter year ranges (such as long as it is all exactly four digits year values...)

PS: I just came across this project and it looks very nice - I have bookmarked it and will sure try out rmpc.
