Deprecation of bulk conversion of issues to discussions via labels

On June 6, 2025, we’ll be deprecating the ability to convert issues to discussions based on labels feature.

While this bulk migration option will be removed, you can still manually convert individual issues to discussions using the Convert to discussion option. For more details, check out our documentation.

Why exactly was this done?

I recommended to use this feature to my mate so he could use issues as an actual backlog of tasks and discussions for feature requests on his public project, only to find that this functionality is deprecated.

I hope you do understand that sifting through 670 issues as of the time of writing (https://github.com/Vinifera-Developers/Vinifera/issues) or writing custom code to do that is far from a fun task.

Thanks for the heads up. Bulk conversion was definitely a handy shortcut, but it makes sense to streamline features if they’re not widely used. Glad to know we’ll still have the option to convert issues individually, even if it takes a bit more time.

This is a bizarre move. There’s obviously still an internal API to handle converting issues → discussions (the UI still does it), so why isn’t it exposed via REST or GraphQL? I'd expect something like:

• REST: POST /repos/{owner}/{repo}/issues/{issue_number}/transfer (or a dedicated convert_to_discussion endpoint).
• GraphQL: convertIssueToDiscussion(input: { issueId, categoryId }) mutation (or similar).
