Submodule Replacement Announcement

It's finally that time, #7277 is happening.

Tomorrow:

• PRs will be filed into the admin, editor, and studio repositories to add maven pom files
  • These will not work on their own. This is deliberate, and not really fixable since they depend on properties that would only be available as a submodule.
  • Existing build instructions for submodule developers do not change - just ignore the maven bits.
• A PR in the mainline codebase will be filed with submodule instructions and upstream documentation regarding the change

Between 2026-03-23 and 2026-03-27, likely one module a day:

• PRs will be filed into the submodules which:
  • Each PR into a submodule will generate a PR against the upstream repository updating the submodule hash
  • May remove the GHA release infrastructure, pending me figuring out a good solution for changelogs.
• The submodule repository names will be harmonized -> You will need to adjust your git remotes in your local clones
  • opencast/opencast-admin-interface -> opencast/admin-ui
  • opencast/opencast-editor -> opencast/editor
  • No change for studio
• The entire history of the admin repository will be rewritten
  • While working on this, I may temporarily remove everyone's ability to write to the repository.
  • Authors with outstanding PRs will have conflicts. Please rebase, refile, or reach out for help. Properly structured PRs should only be a couple of minutes to rebase since this will result in no functional changes.
  • Because the upstream history will be completely rewritten you must either:
    • Delete and refork the admin repository
    • Force push all of the branches you want to keep
      • Hint: git push $my_fork $upstream_fork/$branch_name:refs/heads/$branch_name --force will do this without having to manually check out a different branch.

At somepoint shortly after next week:

• Work with the other packaging maintainers and harmonize the repo naming for the debs, rpms, and docker containers.

I would also like to take this opportunity and get rid of the docker image naming in favor or the generic oci image term (not Oracle Cloud but Open Container Initiative ;).

Slight delay on things, update at the bottom:

Submodule tags will continue to be generated in their respective repositories. This is planned because the automated release notes generation (example release) does not recurse into submodules making opencast/opencast's planned transition to that tool would be problematic. We are going to keep generating tags in the submodules, and then for a given opencast/opencast tag it will point to the tag in the submodule. General r/N.x branches will point to their respective branches in the submodule as well. If this sounds like a problem please let me know ASAP.

Tuesday update:

• Work has started on the editor
• Expect editor and studio to be done by end of day Wednesday
• Announcements of completed work on each submodule will be posted in Matrix
