Note to contributors and maintainers: this is not intended to be a regular part of release operations. This prior notification is coming because it's my first major release since joining the maintainer team (#38337) and as such, I want to prepare for it a bit more in-depth, as a way to make sure it goes as smoothly as other releases do! However, for users, if you find this "head's up" that a new major release is coming useful, please let us know in a reply to this message. |

Commentary for 42
Focus on minimumReleaseAge
You'll notice that there are a number of big features here - and in recent minor releases - that focus on Minimum Release Age.
With recent supply chain attacks, the Renovate team have been hard at work improving the support we've had in Renovate (since 2019!) for this functionality, and making it as predictable as possible, so we can then enable it by default for users of config:best-practices.
We're starting with the enabling of the npm datasource, but will look to extend this functionality in future major releases, based on community feedback, and ecosystem support.
Deprecations
As part of this release, we want to make you aware of deprecated features which will be removed as of Renovate 43:
- the
renovate-schema.jsonwill only support repository configuration, and a separaterenovate-admin-schema.jsonwill be needed for global/self-hosted configuration

I wanted to drop out a note to let folks know that on roughly 2025-11-06, we will release Renovate v42.
As a major release, there will be a number of breaking changes.
These breaking changes are currently tagged in the v42 milestone, so you can see what's most likely coming (unless our testing requires we bump them to a future release).
(Note that this Milestone also includes some non-breaking changes)
More information will be available in the release notes, which we will start drafting as a reply to this Discussion below.
Closer to the release window, we'll be primarily focussing on fixing bugs related to the upcoming release.
We (Mend) have not yet decided the timelines for v42 to land on the Mend Renovate Community/Enterprise Cloud.
