The overrideFile() function in libs/go/sia/file takes an error variable in its function signature, and then does nothing with it. This removes the error argument from overrideFile(), and handles the err from os.ReadFile() in the Update() function in standard go idiom.

Unit tests continue to pass.

Summary of Changes

Hello, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request refines the error handling mechanisms within the file package, specifically addressing an unused error parameter in overrideFile and ensuring that file read operations in Update correctly propagate errors. The changes enhance code robustness and clarity by adhering to standard Go error handling practices.

Highlights

  • Error Handling Improvement: Improved error handling within the Update function by explicitly checking and returning errors from os.ReadFile operations.
  • Function Signature Refinement: Refactored the overrideFile function by removing an unused error parameter from its signature, enhancing code clarity and correctness.
  • Local Error Variable Declaration: Corrected the declaration of the err variable within overrideFile to ensure it is properly scoped and initialized.

Code Review

This pull request refactors the file update logic in libs/go/sia/file/file.go, specifically by adding error handling for os.ReadFile and modifying the overrideFile function signature. A high-severity security vulnerability was identified regarding the predictable generation of temporary filenames, which could lead to a TOCTOU race condition. It is recommended to use os.CreateTemp to generate secure, unpredictable temporary filenames.
