Custom DNS OK Android 5 but not Android 11

I would welcome a little help please.

No problems custom DNS with Samsung running Android 5
eg
gnirehtet restart -d 999.999.999.999
gnirehtet relay
Ctrl c
n
gnirehtet relay (normally needs twice relay)

and using android11 on motorola with the built in 8.8.8.8 DNS
eg
adb shell am start -a com.genymobile.gnirehtet.RESTART -n com.genymobile.gnirehtet/.GnirehtetActivity (thx to whoever posted this)

gnirehtet relay
Ctrl c
n
gnirehtet tunnel
gnirehtet relay

but not with a custom DNS, tried everything i can think of
eg
adb shell am start -a com.genymobile.gnirehtet.RESTART -n com.genymobile.gnirehtet/.GnirehtetActivity --es message -d 999.999.999.999
(this bit works I get the message "has extras")

but
neither gnirehtet relay (tunnel,relay)
nor commands shown below work:

adb shell am start -a com.genymobile.gnirehtet.RELAY -n com.genymobile.gnirehtet/.GnirehtetActivity
(no Ctrl c required so also indicates not working)

adb shell am start -a com.genymobile.gnirehtet.TUNNEL -n com.genymobile.gnirehtet/.GnirehtetActivity

adb shell am start -a com.genymobile.gnirehtet.RELAY -n com.genymobile.gnirehtet/.GnirehtetActivity

Any ideas?
