Change output on IJulia to scale between min and max by default?

Currently, the default output on IJulia is quite useless in many cases since the image isn't scaled (left), while a simple scaling works well (right):

I think a sane default is to linearly scale between the minimum and maximum value (the approach already taken by ImageView).

Personally, I would not want this. We can't pass additional arguments to Base.display(), so if I wanted to view an image without rescaling, it would be impossible to do so. With the current behavior, it's easy to view the image as-is (by simply displaying it), or to view the image rescaled (by rescaling and displaying it, as you've done). Making this change would make the latter marginally easier but make the former much harder. I don't think that's a good tradeoff.

Of course, this could be controlled with a global flag in the Images module, but adding extra global state to avoid calling a one-line function also seems like a poor tradeoff.

ImageView is a different situation, since it provides explicit controls on the scaling of the displayed image.

I've run into this too. My workaround is to define this function in my .juliarc.jl, and then I just call grayim(img).
