CMIP7 diagnostic of vertically integrated heat and salt #987

@adcroft

Description

@adcroft

Five vertically integrated diagnostics of heat/salt are requested for Omon.

  • absscint : Integral wrt depth of seawater absolute salinity expressed as salt mass content
  • pfscint : Integral wrt depth of seawater preformed salinity expressed as salt mass content
  • scint : Integral wrt depth of seawater practical salinity expressed as salt mass content
  • chcint : Depth Integrated Seawater Conservative Temperature Expressed As Heat Content
  • phcint : Integrated Ocean Heat Content from Potential Temperature

These are not full-depth integrals and instead will be provided on CMIP "spatial shape" XY-B which has four levels, nominally

  • 0 - 300 m
  • 300 - 700 m
  • 700 - 2000 m
  • 2000 - ocean floor
    or
  • 0 - 30.3 bar
  • 30.3 - 70.7 bar
  • 70.7 - 202.5 bar
  • 202.5 bar - ocean floor
    The vertical axis of XY-B is oplayer4 meaning ocean-pressure-layer-4 not "O Player 4". 🎮

Issues:

  • I'm currently discussing with @baylorfk about definition of vertical grid for Boussinesq and non-Boussinesq. I'll report here as things evolve.
  • There are three variants of ranges of these integrals between the air table and preprint but these should hopefully be reconciled shortly. The main question is whether to use bounds in z, pressure, either/or, or z*.
  • In the code, we need a new grid generator
    • if the definition uses distance relative to from the free-surface
    • if the definition uses pressure (in either Boussinesq mode)
