What about asking if we should install Rosetta? |

After my exams I could try to install nix via an installer. Probably should create a timemachine first xD |

We have an affordance for prompting the user if it's an "interactive" install, but generally still need to find sane default behavior for headless installs (or requiring a flag before invocation). I do have one affordance (not yet in master) for forcing a fresh sudo prompt that can break this wall (developed for the specific case of confirming it is OK to remove the Nix Store volume) but it feels heavy-handed and I think it would block a CI install for any CI provider that doesn't patch sudo to keep it from actually prompting (not sure if this is true anywhere). |
I would say it could be if we're planning to be stuck on x86_64-darwin for a long time. I'm hoping NixOS#4334 progresses quick enough that we can avoid requiring users to have Rosetta 2. I guess it may still take a while since we have a big Nixpkgs PR as a dependency. |

Fair! :) I am assuming the current state persists for long enough that the quality of the onboarding experience for Big Sur M1 users will matter--but if it'll be short-lived, there's no need to spend much time answering them. One way or another this work won't make it into Nix any sooner than NixOS#4289, so it seems reasonable to sit and wait for now, unless @thefloweringash has any sense of when that might land (crude range of weeks/months?) I guess one other factor might be whether having Rosetta 2 installed will keep Nix from figuring out which to use, in which case I'd be inclined to leave it up to the DIYers... |

I was hoping to get back to single-step Darwin installs via NixOS#4289, so this PR is a draft at at folding NixOS#4305 into an automatic installer step. Curious what anyone thinks (particularly people who have m1 hardware in already like @matthewbauer @kloenk). I have a number of specific questions, but I guess I should start with the one that would moot the rest:
Do you think it is acceptable/desirable to run
softwareupdate --install-rosettaautomatically at all?
