[BUG] Update available text displays even when fully updated

What's Wrong?

Description:

Claude Code displays an "update available" notification, but when I attempt to upgrade via Homebrew, it reports the latest version is already installed.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Launch Claude Code
2. Observe "update available" notification
3. Run brew update && brew upgrade claude-code
4. Homebrew reports: "Warning: Not upgrading claude-code, the latest version is already installed"

Expected behavior:
No update notification should appear when the installed version matches the latest available version.

Actual behavior:
Update notification appears despite being on the latest version.

What Should Happen?

No update notification should appear when the installed version matches the latest available version.

Environment:

• OS: macOS (Darwin 24.6.0)
• Installation method: Homebrew
• Claude Code version: 2.16

Additional context:
Ran brew update to ensure Homebrew formulas were current before attempting upgrade. Issue persists.

I get this, too on Windows.

Right before I run it, I run this:

c:\git\packer.work>winget find Anthropic.ClaudeCode

  c:\git\packer.work>winget upgrade Anthropic.ClaudeCode
  No available upgrade found.
  No newer package versions are available from the configured sources.

Still, at the bottom, I see this: Update available! Run: winget upgrade Anthropic.ClaudeCode

If this is never going to be addressed can we at least get a way to turn it off?

In my case, I didn't have the banner. Then it showed up but there is no update available. I'm running on Windows WSL using brew.

The banner is: Update available! Run: brew upgrade claude-code

I think Claude should have it's own plugins that see all these bugs and open an issues automatically ;-)
It seems that self fixing is one of the feature of OpenClaw.

Can confirm this on Windows 11 (Build 26200) with winget as well.

• Claude Code version: 2.1.70
• winget list Anthropic.ClaudeCode shows version 2.1.70
• winget upgrade Anthropic.ClaudeCode says "No available upgrade found"
• Yet the "Update available! Run: winget upgrade Anthropic.ClaudeCode" banner persists

So the issue is not macOS/Homebrew specific — it also affects Windows/winget installations.

Adding another confirmed datapoint (Linux + Homebrew on WSL):

• Claude Code v2.1.72 showed: "Update available! Run: brew upgrade claude-code"
• At that time the banner could appear while package channels were in flux
• Shortly after, Homebrew cask moved forward and brew upgrade --cask claude-code upgraded 2.1.72 -> 2.1.73
• Current claude --version: 2.1.73 (Claude Code)

This matches the registry/channel lag pattern reported by others (also seen with WinGet).
