In addition to cherry-picking the commit, I added another Sonar exclusion related to this, since the original PR didn't fix the problem. It was easier to fix the problem on the cherry-pick PR since Sonar step does not run on PRs from forks.
Cherry-pick PRs are on the upstream repo, so the Sonar step runs on them and I was able to test immediately.
