Application to create lotteries and simulate a random draw altered upon potentially attached past statistics.
I had this idea to code a lottery drawer back in the days I used to learn coding at school. What kind of algorithm could draw numbers of a given lottery to maximize chance of success based on past statistics. It was the pretext I choose to explore both the new MAUI framework and the DTO/POCO design model concept by developping a multi-plateform lottery random drawer application optionally based on past statistics.
Fast forward to 2021, in my route to get back on my feet, I started developping solo project to stay up to date with more recent technologies.
I enjoy coding U.I. back in the days, WinForm, and I knew WPF was its successor but didn't know anything to this new MVVM / XAML environment. So I developped my first WPF program (Simple DNS Changer) and I ended it with the though that it could be even better if it was a multi platform application.
Simultaneously, I saw that Microsoft pushed a "new" product, MAUI to adress coding an application once and deploying it on several platform ! So I seized this opportunity to learn this "new" technology, and choose to develop a mobile / Windows application that will allow user to draw random number for lotteries he created, with this randomness being more or less biaised by past statistics.
I rapidely coded a Console application prototype, just to implement my biaised random number generator algorithms (for this, I was inspired by my internship work where I developped a dynamic adaptative quiz difficulty to select question randomly along an asymetical Normal law centered around the estimated current appropriate difficulty).
It worked as I wanted, but meanwhile, as I also kept exploring developping models, I came across DTO concept, where the goal is to facilitate data serialization, by encapsulating only the necessary and simpliest datas required for saving/loading an business object state, and using simple POCO to handle business logics on those datas.
So I modified my Console application to start using a such DTO/POCO architecture while learning it. After a while, I finally choose to refactor largely my code to externalize this in a separate a reusable library (DTO_Infrastructure) not public yet.
I wanted and coded it in order to be final using project agnostic by making it generic, and also though and developped as a format agnostics serializer (and implemented usable Json and XML serializer). It took me kinda long time and became my main prject by then. And eventually this original project became the main testing project of this library in the end.
So now it was the time to really explore this "new" MAUI framework. I put new between quote as I soon realized it was instead more a rebranding and sucessor of the older Xamarin framework than something really "new".
Back in those days, MAUI was still in preview but I was eager to be part of this as the timing sound excellent, coinciding my own wish to explore and developping on mobile and being up to date to the most recent U.I. development.
This journey was more difficult as I anticipated, mainly as a result of both my lack of experience on mobile (well Android only) development and the immaturity of MAUI framework. I had greater hope than I should have on MAUI ; I still think Microsoft launched it way too early, it was (and still is) in "beta" status more than a full production ready product. A lot of bug, unfinished features, was poping everywhere while I discovered it. Some have been fixed by now, but others still not !
But this was a really enriching experience, I learned lot of differents stuff, on Android, on MAUI, as well as keeping improving the competences I developped previously, like MVVM and XAML.
T.L.D.R.: I took the opportunity to discover MAUI, the new U.I multi-plateform framework of Microsoft, by developping a simple lottery drawer application based on my previous work on biaised random number generator as well as exploring and learning DTO/POCO concepts as a own developped library used by this application.
-
Exporting it to iOS / Mac (a physical device is needed though)
-
Offer some commonly used lotteries presets to avoid creation step for new users
-
Improve random drawing user feedback (like simulating a number per number draw, plus an optional rumble / sound effect)
-
Offer U.I. coloring customization (themes).
-
Keep optimizing performances.
-
Rethink/refactor how to use factories as I end up using built in D.I. mechanism behind the sence, but this kind of service locator is considered anti-pattern.
You can build this project in your IDE (I used VS2022 to develop it for example), and use the generated "LotoStatisticalDrawer.exe" executable along its dependancy .dll, or use the generated com.aurelienpascalmaignan.lotterystatisticaldrawer-Signed.apk for Android. You can also download them here, where I provide the .apk for Android and both .zip files for Windows:
-
One with the build executable along its needed .dll (You may still need to install prerequisites packages like Windows App SDK). LotteryStatisticalDrawer_x64_0.0.1_EXE.zip
-
One with the published .msix installer with its certificate. LotteryStatisticalDrawer_x64__0.0.1_Installer.zip
I decline all responsabily of any damage this application could done on your device. Be carefull of any hacking, as I didn't implement any security check.
-
I used some code for globally handling unhandled exception by copying the one posted here : Global exception handling · dotnet/maui · Discussion #653 · GitHub
-
I copied and modified some code from MAUI community toolkit to customize their folder picker code to adapt it as a custom file picker as the built in MAUI file picker didn't fit my need to return the correct Android path of the picked file (could end up returning a cached file path instead). This customized reused code is found in all the files under the Sources/Utilities/CustomFilePicking folder.
I'm not an artist, but I created all my assets .svg images. Some may be inspired by other (usually from a Google Image reseach results), but I (re)created them from scratch.
All .svg files inside /Resources/Images folder, the splash screen loto_splash.svg file in /Resources/Splash folder and the icons loto_icon.svg and loto_iconfg.svg files in /Resources/AppIcon folder are made by Aurélien Pascal Maignan licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.
I used this .gif animation, found from here and modified it to be the the back animation showed while this application is initializing.

Where a limitation of liability is not allowed in full or in part, this limitation may not apply to You.
The disclaimer of warranties and limitation of liability provided above shall be interpreted in a manner that, to the extent possible, most closely approximates an absolute disclaimer and waiver of all liability.
Section 6 – Term and Termination.
This Public License applies for the term of the Copyright and Similar Rights licensed here. However, if You fail to comply with this Public License, then Your rights under this Public License terminate automatically.
Where Your right to use the Licensed Material has terminated under Section 6(a), it reinstates:
automatically as of the date the violation is cured, provided it is cured within 30 days of Your discovery of the violation; or
upon express reinstatement by the Licensor.
For the avoidance of doubt, this Section 6(b) does not affect any right the Licensor may have to seek remedies for Your violations of this Public License.
For the avoidance of doubt, the Licensor may also offer the Licensed Material under separate terms or conditions or stop distributing the Licensed Material at any time; however, doing so will not terminate this Public License.
Sections 1, 5, 6, 7, and 8 survive termination of this Public License.
Section 7 – Other Terms and Conditions.
The Licensor shall not be bound by any additional or different terms or conditions communicated by You unless expressly agreed.
Any arrangements, understandings, or agreements regarding the Licensed Material not stated herein are separate from and independent of the terms and conditions of this Public License.
Section 8 – Interpretation.
For the avoidance of doubt, this Public License does not, and shall not be interpreted to, reduce, limit, restrict, or impose conditions on any use of the Licensed Material that could lawfully be made without permission under this Public License.
To the extent possible, if any provision of this Public License is deemed unenforceable, it shall be automatically reformed to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable. If the provision cannot be reformed, it shall be severed from this Public License without affecting the enforceability of the remaining terms and conditions.
No term or condition of this Public License will be waived and no failure to comply consented to unless expressly agreed to by the Licensor.
Nothing in this Public License constitutes or may be interpreted as a limitation upon, or waiver of, any privileges and immunities that apply to the Licensor or You, including from the legal processes of any jurisdiction or authority.
