The groundwork was laid a few months earlier:
May 30, 2025 — PR #1048 removed print_function imports, PR #1050 dropped Python 2.7 from supported versions in setup.py
What was cleaned up
The removal used ruff rules UP010/UP029 to strip out all from builtins import and from future import statements across 48 files, and removed future from setup.py, pyproject.toml, and requirements.txt.
