In the save files dialog, you can choose the name of the file other than something blank. When navigating to another directory though, you can no longer click back on the file name and type a different name using the cursor (have not tested on keyboard). This makes it so you would have to move the file to its desired location after saving it, which isn't the most ideal solution.
If you do not move to another directory, naming the whatever file it is works perfectly fine.
I have tested this using LXTerminal, xterm, MATE terminal, and the XFCE4 terminal, and have gotten identical results (where I can't name the file after navigating through a directory).
In terms of the tilde version, I compiled and installed tilde from source today (4/25).
