`jazzdelightsme.WingetPathUpdater` is no longer available on winget

jazzdelightsme.WingetPathUpdater is no longer available on winget. See microsoft/winget-pkgs#328932 and microsoft/winget-pkgs#329262 . Microsoft seems to consider this software to be malware?

I first noticed this issue in the failed CI at apache/shardingsphere#37718 .

No package found matching input criteria.

I'd like to know what the currently recommended installation method is? Do we have to wait several more months for the changes in microsoft/winget-cli#549 to be implemented in the Windows Server 2025 runner in GitHub Actions?

I just noticed a failure to install this today, thank you for pointing out why! I will follow up with the winget people.

As a temporary fix for Github Actions CI, I changed winget install --id jazzdelightsme.WingetPathUpdater --source winget to irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jazzdelightsme/WingetPathUpdater/v1.2/WingetPathUpdaterInstall.ps1 | iex. After all, the default shell for the Windows Server 2025 runner is PowerShell 7, so backward compatibility isn't a concern.

No, it's not being treated as malware. The concern is it looks like it's questionable given our policy regarding scripts as installers.

It was created as a helper to address long standing issues with path environment challenges. We shipped an update such that CMD will refresh the path if it's been prepended or appended after WinGet is invoked.

The PowerShell team is also nearing completion for supporting the same behavior natively in PowerShell 7.6.

That makes sense, but before https://github.com/actions/runner-images/blob/main/images%2Fwindows%2FWindows2025-Readme.md was updated to PowerShell 7.6.0 , jazzdelightsme.WingetPathUpdater was still very helpful for CI environments.

I don't think I would use cmd for this, because https://github.com/apache/shardingsphere/blob/master/test%2Fnative%2Fsrc%2Ftest%2Fresources%2Ftest-native%2Fps1%2Fconfig-rdctl.ps1 uses Microsoft's https://github.com/microsoft/Windows-Containers/blob/Main/helpful_tools%2FInstall-DockerCE%2Funinstall-docker-ce.ps1 . Whether or not AI is used to assist in the conversion, converting a nearly thousand-line PowerShell script into a cmd script is too mentally taxing.

I completely understand! There are always practical concerns to address in a world of "theoretical" best practices.

I'm glad a quick workaround was found while we go back and forth over policy concerns with WinGet packages.

There was no malice intended in removing the package. There is an active conversation with @jazzdelightsme, representation from the WinGet community, and me looking for a reasonable path forward.

Not sure how long it takes for package updates to be seen by clients, but the fix for this has been checked in, so should be available "soon": microsoft/winget-pkgs#340129

I tested it at linghengqian/hive-server2-jdbc-driver#66 and it works perfectly.
