I'd like to chip away at this during FY22.
I'll likely split this into a few more manageable chunks.

The "Intersections of regions defined by polygons with curved edges" task was partially resolved in #844, which added a CurvedPolygon class and improved the BezierCurve class.
I also updated and rebased #590 on the develop branch after merging the former.

@kanye-quest updated the MultiMat branch, which was merged in #565

@BradWhitlock please check third checkbox (about MIR) stuff when your PR is merged. Then, I will close this issue and rework what's left in another issue.
