macOS tests are failing when building release binaries

run tests failed with lots of The file was not recognized as a valid object file errors, e.g.

Not sure. Maybe some interaction with ThinLTO and llvm-strip is being pointed at a bitcode file?

Just a note that as of the 22.1.1 release job this problem is still happening.
