Here are some more changes toward getting things working. It's still failing in the data communication step. I think that I need for you to do more of the work here - you still need to add support to the autoconf build and make sure that things are still working without gdal. I'll try to find some more time to review your test and see if I can spot the problem - but you may want to compare line by line with the same test using the mpiserial to see if you can spot the difference. The data appears to be read in correctly, its the distribution that isn't working right and I'm sure its a trivial fix, I just haven't spotted it yet.
