Allow muting of new messages noise for channels

something like a command to allow you to mute a channel from producing the new message noise.

Do you mean disabling ping sounds for channels you've joined?

If that then maybe some channel configuration should be per user settings and integrated into #12 formspec so that you could disable/enable notifications for each channel.

Like having checkbox to enable / disable notifications, similar should be done for private messages as some have been complaining about pm ping sounds and some others prefer getting audible notifications for messages.

As many players keep asking for this it is probably best to just remove sounds for channels and add those again when configuration system is done and per player configuration is actually possible.

While some do want notification sounds for private messages for me it seems that majority of players do not like notification sounds on channels,

I'm also one of those who do want to have notification for private messages but would like to get rid of unnecessary beeps triggered by group chats / channels.

Sounds good, the channel colors are indication enough IMO.

Another option would be to just lower the volume of the bing 🤔
