This pull request performs a significant update of the winston logging library to its latest stable version. The primary motivation is to enhance the project's security by patching a critical 'Prototype Pollution' vulnerability. Additionally, this update ensures the project's dependencies are current, bringing in various stability improvements and new features from the winston ecosystem.

Highlights

  • Dependency Upgrade: The winston logging library has been upgraded from version ^3.2.1 to ^3.18.3 to ensure the project benefits from the latest features and stability improvements.
  • Security Vulnerability Fix: This upgrade specifically addresses a 'Prototype Pollution' vulnerability (SNYK-JS-XML2JS-5414874) identified in an older version of winston, which had a medium severity and known Proof of Concept exploit maturity.
  • Extensive Version Update: The update spans multiple minor versions of winston, incorporating numerous bug fixes, dependency updates, and minor feature enhancements that have been released over the past few months.

Code Review

This pull request upgrades winston to v3.18.3 to resolve a security vulnerability. This is a large version jump, and I've noted a potential breaking change for TypeScript users in a specific comment.

While this PR is a good security improvement, I've noticed that several other dependencies are significantly outdated and have known vulnerabilities, some of them critical (e.g., axios, uuid). I strongly recommend auditing and upgrading other dependencies in separate PRs to improve the project's overall security and stability.

high

This winston upgrade to v3.18.3 includes a breaking change introduced in v3.15.0: the LogCallback type was removed from the TypeScript definitions. This may cause build failures if other parts of the codebase use this type. According to the release notes, this callback was not being executed anyway, so the fix would be to remove any usage of this type.
